A desk is one of the furniture purchases people get wrong most often — not because desks are complicated, but because the decision gets made too quickly. You find one that looks good in a photo, confirm it fits the wall, and order it. Then it arrives and the surface is too small for two monitors, there is nowhere to run cables, and the assembly took three hours longer than expected.
Here are the five things worth checking before you commit.
1. Surface dimensions — width and depth both matter
Most people check the width of a desk. Fewer people check the depth.
Width determines what fits side by side — monitors, speakers, a lamp. A single-monitor setup works comfortably on a desk 48 inches wide. Two monitors need at least 55 to 60 inches. If you use an ultrawide monitor, measure the stand footprint and add 6 inches on each side for comfortable reach.
Depth determines how far away your monitor sits from your eyes and whether your elbows can rest on the surface while you type. The recommended viewing distance for a standard 24-inch monitor is 20 to 30 inches. A desk with a depth of 24 inches puts a monitor at the back edge roughly 20 to 24 inches from your seated position — workable but tight. A depth of 28 to 30 inches gives more flexibility. Shallower desks (20 inches or less) work for writing surfaces and standing reference setups but feel cramped as primary computer workstations.
For L-shaped desks, check both arms independently. The longer arm is typically the primary work surface; the shorter arm works well as a secondary monitor or reference area. Make sure the corner section is wide enough to not be dead space — corners under 18 inches on each side are difficult to use practically.
2. Cable management — check before you buy, not after
This is the feature most buyers do not think about until the desk is assembled and there are six cables dangling in front of a white panel.
Look for the following on the product page:
Cable grommets — round holes cut into the desk surface (usually near the back or corners) that allow cables to pass through cleanly. These are the minimum. A desk without grommets forces you to run cables over the surface edge, which looks messy and can stress cable connections over time.
Cable trays or management channels — these are brackets or tracks mounted underneath the desk that bundle and route cables horizontally out of sight. More useful than grommets alone, but not always included.
Monitor arm compatibility — if you use or plan to use a monitor arm (as opposed to a monitor stand), check that the desk has a clamp-compatible edge. Most desks with a surface thickness of 1 to 3 inches support standard monitor arm clamps, but very thin surfaces or surfaces with a beveled edge can cause problems.

3. Surface material and durability
The photo shows you the color. It does not tell you how the surface holds up to daily use.
MDF with laminate or veneer is the most common material in this price range. It looks clean, is available in a wide range of finishes, and is easy to produce consistently. The durability depends on the quality of the laminate coating. Lower-quality laminates chip at edges and corners within a year of regular use. Better-quality laminates resist scratching and moisture from coffee cups. Check whether the product description mentions edge banding — this is the material applied to raw edges and is the first place cheaper desks show wear.
Solid wood desks are heavier, more expensive, and more durable. They can be refinished if the surface is scratched or worn. The tradeoff is price and assembly weight — solid wood desks are significantly harder to move and reassemble.
Tempered glass surfaces look striking but show every fingerprint and scratch mark. They require consistent cleaning and are not practical as primary work surfaces for most people.
Particleboard is lighter and less expensive than MDF but less resistant to moisture and edge damage. It is fine for light-use surfaces but will show wear faster in a high-use environment.
4. Weight capacity
This is listed on most product pages but rarely checked.
Weight capacity refers to the maximum load the desk surface is designed to support — monitors, computers, speakers, books, and anything else placed on top. A standard computer setup with two monitors, a laptop, and peripherals can weigh 30 to 50 pounds without much effort.
Most desks in the $200 to $600 range are rated for 100 to 200 pounds of surface load, which is sufficient for nearly any home office setup. Problems arise with desks rated below 80 pounds — these are designed for light reference use and will flex or bow under a two-monitor setup over time.
For L-shaped desks, weight capacity sometimes refers to each arm independently. Check whether the spec is for the total desk or per arm.
Shelf and hutch weight capacity is a separate number. Bookshelves and storage shelves integrated into desk units are typically rated for 20 to 40 pounds per shelf. Do not load them with heavy textbooks or binders beyond what the product specifies.
5. Assembly difficulty — honest expectations
Most online furniture requires assembly. That is expected. What is worth checking is how long it realistically takes and how many people you need.
Estimated assembly time is listed on many product pages. Treat the listed time as the manufacturer's optimistic estimate under ideal conditions with an experienced assembler. For a first-time setup in your home, add 30 to 50 percent.
Number of people required — L-shaped desks, hutch desks, and desks with heavy surface panels benefit from two people during assembly. The product page will note this where relevant. Single-person assembly of large desks risks surface damage and personal injury when panels are heavy and awkward.
Tool requirements — most desks include an Allen wrench and require only a screwdriver. Some require a rubber mallet for certain joints. If the desk requires power tools not mentioned in the description, that is unusual and worth confirming before ordering.
